The show ended yesterday so I assume were all resting up. ASR, CLASS@ASR and Crossroads were great. We were glad to see business being done on all three floors. Check some of the coverage from all three shows at ASRlive.com

Thank  you to everyone that came out. It was fun. it was eventful. it was the best jan or feb ASR I saw in years. Well now were working on August’s show. Back in San Diego on the 13th - 15h.

yesss. Also if it is not done already and you are an apparel company sponsor a solid guy to sharpen your family. Sponsor Gavin Gillette. check him out with Cote http://surf.transworld.net/1000095593/videos/cotes-cube-with-giant-killer-gavin-gillette/

So thank you for your support.. you rule!!

RANDOM PIC - so 2nite it took me way too long to find a Random Pic until I stumbled across this thing. There was a time I was watching my grom (4 years ago ish) I couldn't stop the little guy from crying so i grabbed the whipcream from the fridge and he would love it.. I would walk up to him fire some on his arm and or legs and he'd be pumped for 20 or so minutes.. it was amazing. gnite.

Marketability. . .

by Jim Shubin | Feb 01, 2010 | | Leave a Comment

Read this from cover to cover. It has more info than your encyclopedia britanica.

Hey there again!!.

Check out this RAEN Optics video of a visit from a bit back. Its funny.

What else am I going to write about other than the show this week?

how about this. We have been through our first month of 2010 and so far it seems that after a good batch of rough seas were all a it smarter. Or are we? Lets continue to do our best to wet blanket that recession. Nielsen group has done everything in their power to bring a solid show. That is a perfect opurtunity for retailers to  not only spend their open to buy on some brands that have graced their reality space but new, fresh hype.

My personal opinion has always been I like shit to be a little different. Be it a brand, a retailer, musician, event etcetera. you get the picture. When you come for set up this week bring your A- game. Give the retailers every reason to kick down your doors. As for retailers I’ve always enjoyed the buyers who would come in to my booth super fired up on their store and show my ass up with pics, event’s from the past in the works. They are proud of their instore visuals, new and emerging brands etc.

As I write this my wife and I are watching the 52nd Grammy Awards. Usually I don’t pay attention but I sure the hell did when Lady Gaga opened the evening. Now folks I don’t have her on my IPOD but I will tell you she has to be the MOST marketable thing around right now. Then to top that off she teams up with Sir Elton John. LADY GAGA AND SIR ELTON JOHN mother effffers.. So good. then i noticed Adam Sandler once again rocking DC.

So this week I paid a visit to Troy Lee’s headquarters. I have a long write up for you on that but will fire that over this week. Mando formerly of Unitribe, Paul Frank, and DC is at the healm of product so rest assure its in good hands.. yaaaaaa.

So enough of my psycho babble. Take a look at the exhibitor list for this weeks ASR, CLASS@ASR and Crossroads shows. Again if you’ve been in a coma its this Wednesday the 3rd and Thursday the 4th.  yes only 2 days so get up early and get to work.

His wife's name is Chris, His name is chris, they both love George Foreman and so they named their son Chris II. It doesn't stop there. His wife told him of the bun in the oven "Chris"tmas day 08, They found out Chris II was a boy on 4-20. Chris (the wifey) had Chris II on 9/11 a week after the due date. wow. Well this was his xmas card from last month. I like Chris.

Here we go. you ready? HELLZ BELLZ ya

by Jim Shubin | Jan 29, 2010 | | Leave a Comment

Next Wednesday and Thursday 3rd & 4th is ASR. see you there..

here are a few things to chew on.

HELLZ to the BELLZ.

HEADQUARTERED IN DOWNTOWN, LOS ANGELES, HELLZ IS A CONTEMPORARY CLOTHING
BRAND CATERING TO THE BURGEONING CLASS OF REBELLIOUS YOUTH. INTERCONNECTED
AND EVER OPINIONATED, THIS GLOBAL COMMUNITY CONSISTING OF ARTISTS, MUSICIANS,
AND DESIGNERS LEAD THE WORLD IN THE CREATION OF SUBCULTURE. HELLZ
RECOGNIZES THIS CLASS AND CELEBRATES THEIR MOVEMENT.
HELMED BY FOUNDER AND CREATIVE DIRECTOR LANIE ALABANZA., HELLZ IS BLAZING
A BOLD NEW PATH IN REDEFINING THE AESTHETIC OF MODERN FASHION. LANIE’S
PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH DRAWS FROM THE FINE BALANCE OF CONSTRAINT AND
RESTRAINT, WALKING THE FINE LINE BETWEEN HI AND LO. HELLZ BROAD SPECTRUM IN
ITS DESIGN SPANS FROM PUNK CHIC TO SOPHISTICATED COUTURE AND DELIBERATELY
CHALLENGES SOCIAL NORMS OF THE ROLE OF FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY. FASHION
AFTER ALL, SEEKS ONE END TO ITS MEANS: TO CLOTHE ONE OUT OF NECESSITY. HELLZ
IS YOUR NECESSARY ACCESSORY.

Couldn’t have dared to write that mission statement. They started the assault in 05 and have been carving their niche ever since.  Go see them at CLASS@ASR in booth #CL 111. That whole area of the show will be interesting. you have SUPERbrand on one corner, Loser Machine Company, True Love & False Idols next to HELLZ and right across the isle is Arka. DAyyyammn.

Get your whiskers shaved off your front porch on the main ASR floor from Atwater and ASR.. Do it? after you do that you can grab your little mirror out of your fanny pack go and sit in the Skull Candy Lounge and tap your toes to some tunes. Once you burn off some calories doing that refuel at the Vans Booth where Steve VanDoren himself will be cookin up his sig waffles. umm good.

Stop by either DC, Grind for Life or IASC and make sure you drop off a few bucks for the unfortunate people in Haiti. so sad. hook it up please. There are rumors about the best trick contest at Crossroads Weds. something to see..

As I write this my wife is watching Celebrity Rehab. She is hooked on the show. wow. heavy shit.

Hey Rhythm was scheduled to have a party at the Bondi Bar in San Diego for ASR. Well unfortunetely Bondi Bar has closed down. Stay tuned for the new venue. If you want Rods cellie I have it. Blow him up..

Thank You,

We want you to get up, get out and be adventurous this Spring 2010 season. The SP10 collection is centered around pieces that are easy to grab and go; reversible shirts and jackets give you two different looks, self-packable outerwear and board shorts are both convenient and discreet, and with three denim washes, lightweight knits and custom plaids rounding out the line you’re ready to go hike the Appalachians or make some trails in the city. Either way shenanigans are likely to ensue with style names like “Walk of Shame”, “Spring Fling” and “Drunk Dial”.

Got it??!

there are a few brands missing from the list above that didn’t make it on there. here are a few more to wet your whistle.
Native Footwear, Incase, SLVDR, Huffer, Keep Shoes, Royal Elastics, GRN Apple Tree,  Tavik, WE MOTO, ARKA, Marshall Artist, Tigerlily, True Love & False Idols, and many MANY more..

The Retail list is stronger than an OX. We have all the best surf and skate shops coming along with key boutiques from coast to coast not to mention retailers and distributors from all over the globe. I just talked to Japan, Tahiti, France, Austria, Russia, and Canada, UK, and Germany in the past 2 days. I was told that a team of over a dozen are coming down from Zumiez along with many more of the “big guys”.  There will be a very strong media presence as well so bring your A-Game.

On the CLASS@ASR floor we’ll have the Hype Circle Blogger lounge. This will include Hypebeast, Slamxhype,  Cool Hunting, Rad Collector, Fatlace, Miss, CtotheJL doing what they do.

Have you heard of Livery design Gruppe in Huntington Beach? Scott and his crew will be at the shows as well. check them out. I’ll give you more detail as I get it.

So now I’d like to tell you not ask you to support this amazing company.. Hawaiian based The Organik check out the site and while at the tradeshows come by the booth and say hello to Ed. He is a really good guy. If you disagree I will be mad at you. Well maybe no but I will ask you why and probably give you a weird look like you have something funky on your face or like you just sneezed without covering your mouth. Sorry I just drifted off..

WHO WILL BE IN THE SUPERBOWL? find out tomorrow.. have a great one!

Love you lots,

Let’s play something fun and funny

by Jim Shubin | Jan 12, 2010 | | Leave a Comment

Hey Hi Hope all is well.
UPS said Friday was a banger for them. They had the best day in stock since the summer of 2002. They are seeing better than expected volume on small business packages blasting around town.. yaay. that sounds like good news to me.

Anyhow,  I love good news. in other good news the waves have been silly good since Friday. I missed today but could’ve punched myself in the eye for the amount of texts saying its fun.

So I want to tell you about a few things going on for ASR. Thanks to Pabst Blue Ribbon (thanks Steve), Wahoos, and ASR retailers and exhibitors will be quenching their thirst and eating for free so get there early. 2000 beers could last 2 hours or could last 2 days. Head to Petco Parking lot for Crossroads on feb 3rd and 4th if you haven’t heard. While you’re there check out the Best to date Crossroads Best Trick with $10,000 up for grabs. you kidding me? ten grand! I can do  lot of funny things with 10k. LOOKOUT Cole!

Speaking of skate. I went to Switchboard a bit back and those boys are up to some good stuff. They have a lot going on over there with more to come. I will give you a detailed writeup on them soon. They hired Mark Sweetser to strengthen the empire. ya Mark! more soon.

Back to the show. ASR will also be having the Volcom Mini again and will be dishing $10,000 as well. for shit sakes. I CAN WALK OUT OF THERE WITH TWENTY GRAND. I’ll have to dust off my size 12 Evols.

While you’re there make sure you make time for the fashion show. CLASS@ASR is upstairs directly above the ASR floor. walk into Hall E and go up the escalators and you’re there. A few good things going on in there besides some AMAZING BRANDS is the OSEA Spa, Barracuda Hair will be gardening on your domes once again and a list of other good things. I’ll do a detailed list of what’s happening down there in a bit.

So if you haven’t yet booked your travel and accomodations do it now. The three shows (ASR, CLASS@ASR, Crossroads) will be going off.  Again those dates are Feb 3rd & 4th.

Thank you,
Jim Shubin

2010 yaaaaa. HAPPY NEW YEAR MAAMs and MRs.

What a year. If 2009 had nuts most of us would want to kickem. I do like to keep it positive and although I am counting the minutes to a fresh year I wanted to post a few “Random Pics” from 09. Some great news as I have visited a few retailers from our world and they seemed pretty happy with their holiday sales. Also a few good days of surf to cap off the year wasn’t so bad either. Also just peepin the weather for the week it looks like in So Cal we’ll have some solid weather in the 70’s to start things off. I’m also excited to hear HBO will be bringing back Eastbound & Down.. Wow!! I’m misty eyed.

Congrats to Mick on his world title. Love seeing it come down to pipe.

We have a bit more than a month until Feb ASR/CLASS@ASR/Crossroads. The team has been working hard on the show and I can say it is going to be a banger. I want to say that the whole crew at Nielsen is amazing. I usually find a bad seed or for better word Jack Ass within a week of working with a company. That has not been the case with ASR. Amazing group of people with such positive energy. Big hugs to you all. Thank you..

2009 RANDOM PICS:

This is the Roman Candle that I fired off at Justin Heit from Raen Optics on my last visit down to his office. He had to take a very important call for his creative agency and basically she (the potential client) was very surprised to hear him cursing in her ear. little did she know he was getting blasted in the chest with fireballs. He is just healing up from an ankle injury so he couldn't really run fast so I got some good shots at him. He had to write her a long apology email and I took a pic of him doing that as well.. Look for the video soon of the fireball incident. it's really funny. It'll be up on youtube/asrlive soon.

I came across this pic a bit back because I got myself a Mullet and needed inspiration. I shat myself when I saw this. I sent the pic to a friend that has not seen our daughter in a while and I told her its our girl. I have not received a reply on that email to date. I'm not making fun of her if she somehow belongs to you. I'm just sayin..

BLAQ INK Gallery

by Jim Shubin | Dec 22, 2009 | | Leave a Comment

Hey there,

Paul Dillman from ASR and I went to see the guys from Sullen a bit back to see their new retail spot and Sullen HQ both in Huntington Beach.  The store / Gallery is called BLAQ INK and is right off main. 126 Main St #103, Huntington Beach. Its behind the Billabong Store. We were greeted by Gill the nice guy that runs the Gallery. Gill has a brand called Live that had a couple tees that caught my eye as well. So, In there we chatted and looked at the artwork  from Sullen co-founder / creative director Ryan Smith, and a great arsenal of other artists like Carlos Rojas, Big Gus, Carlos Torres and other insane pieces hanging on the wall for a peak or your purchasing pleasure.

BLAQ INK also works as their retail spot so while talking with Ryan, Gill and Jeremy Hanna (Sullen partner W Ryan) I checked out the selection of softgoods. The apparel consists of top from the original artwork provided by the family of artists Sullen has in their arsenal. That family of artists Ryan and Jeremy has built for Sullen is pretty strong. You can buy yourself a solid top that is a collab from Sullen / Hart & Huntington and your favorite piece of artwork right off the wall from Carlos Torres. It happened right in front of me. They sold a piece as I was taking pics of the outside of the store. They recently had a proper HB Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting at BLAQ INK

I REALLY want to emphasize how cool the guys from Sullen are. I met them late last winter for breakfast at Sugar Shack and loved their story of Sullen. They started from an apartment and have grown to about 500 stores but humbly appreciate any love they receive for the brand. Jeremy Hanna and Ryan Smith deserve all of the success the brand has received and will gain in the years to come. I will warn you the buys look like they are going to kick your ass and have some pretty intimidating ink on their skin but we were all good once I showed them my back tat of Wonder Woman’s Jet on my whole back. Anyhow I will tell you this. Sullen is going to be huge.

BLAQ INK Gallery like I stated before is in HB they still live in HB and the Sullen headquarters is in HB as well so off we went to see the Sullen office. I parked my shitty 94 Volvo next to a nice BMW and saw that it was full of guys three times the size of me so while I walked by I took a glance in and saw a little fog” on the inside of the car and kept my stride toward the front door. I wasn’t sure if fog was in the forecast inside of BMWs that day. So I saved myself the embarasment of asking who may have been in the parking lot with dry ice fogging up their nice sedan and just met with the Sullen crew inside for a tour. Not sure who that was in the car but maybe its better I just keep it to myself.

The Sullen employees seemed pretty happy to be there and it seemed like a great family environment. Ryan Showed us some of the projects he has been working on and then heard they had a visitor and I had to meet him. It was B Real and his posse of 20.. Well I’m exagerating about 20 but there were a lot of them. I heard a story that B Real (Cypress Hill) was at a Laker game the cameras focused in on him and he showed the world his Sullen Tee.. He loves the brand and he was there to work on a project with the Sullen boys. Look for that soon.

Anyhow, when you get some time go visit their spot. If you’re lucky you will run into Jeremy and Ryan the guys I would say should be running HB if they aren’t already.

Thank You for your time guys..

HAPPY HOLICRAZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ask Paul about how important it is to feed the meters. It is said that the meter maids are ghosts in huntington. You will not see them walking up to your car. Just pay the parking or your ffffed about $75ish. This was the day of our Sullen visit. It worked well for my Random Pic. I didn't even have to dig in my stockpile of pics. remember meter-maids = GHOSTS.

The Suit and Group Y. . .

by Jim Shubin | Dec 16, 2009 | | 2 Comments

Hey there!
Thursday I went to HSS to check out the induction of the late Dick Baker into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame.
The weather held up luckily so we were able to stay dry. PT did a fabulous job emceeing the deal. Aaron Pai and his HSS fam did an amazing job hosting the event. There were plenty of smiles on the faces people listening the speeches from the “big boys” in the surf industry. They were no doubt smilies of thankful people paying respect to the man that helped mold our industry into what it is today. Thank You Dick Baker for your time and generosity. You are missed man..
Baker’s amazing wife Una with sons Jack and Ryan left a message on the sidewalk for ya to see. Have a look when you get a chance. While you’re there head inside the store to see the rehashed HSS.. good job all. Looks neato.
Then I headed to the offices of La Jolla Group for the Group Y Network deal. It went really well. I was asked to Moderate a panel of 8 execs from the group. When I found out good friend Ryan Rush was one of the panelists I figured if it got boring I would light him up.. lucky for him we had good flow to say the least. In other words MT and Divel were there. there was no worry on shyness on stage.
I have to say MT  is incredible. I couldn’t stop laughing at his body language during the Q & A’s. He left the stage for a couple minutes then came back to wrap up the deal. He is a true leader of the surf industry. His against the grain approach to Design and Marketing is probably a good part of La Jolla’s recent success. Good job Group Y on their 35th event and to La Jolla Group for doing such a great job. You guys are on fire in the middle of the shittiest economic funk we’ve seen. Thanks again for hosting the deal. I had fun.
I had my buddy Darren do a write-up on the evening with Group Y and La Jolla. Thx Darren.. Read below.
The La Jolla Group have something special. They have an amazing new headquarters in Irvine, four amazing brands that according to President Bill Bussiere performed well enough in a recession for the group to experience commendable growth, an amazing core of talented leaders, an amazing surfer and surf icon (Michael Tomson) as their consultant, and to seal the deal they even have an amazing basketball court.
Comprised of O’neill, …Lost, Rusty and Metal Mulisha (and maybe soon to be joined by one or two more…), the La Jolla Group hosted the 35th Group Y industry discussion earlier tonight at their very new and very skate-able HQ. My friend, CLASS@ASR’s Jim Shubin, spent the evening picking the brains of some of the LJG’s best and brightest. The discussion gave some insight into the marketing and sales strategies that have been successful for the LJG in the past year. Highlights included the Hyperfreak campaign O’neill ran and some product collabs and event sponsorships by Metal Mulisha. It was intriguing to hear how very different each brand at the La Jolla Group is from one another and how the group’s overall organization helps combine the strengths and best practices of each into a focused plan that can be applied to all four.
As a recent college grad at my first Group Y event I wanted to say something. I Googled this about five minutes ago and saw that after tuition, fees, etc. ONE hour of community college classtime costs you about $50. Tonight I spent three hours having beers with my friends, meeting new friends and learning more about the industry than I learned in 4 years at college. And it cost $30. That’s amazing. See you at the next Group Y event.
-Darren Bridges.
thx again Darren.. next time take pics you ffffer.
Thank You,
Jim Shubin

RANDOM PIC: hey, I just want to make your holiday shopping easier. Last week I went to visit my buddy that recently had surgery. On the way there I stopped off to grab some gifts for him and family. As I walked in about half way down the first isle I saw what seemed to be children in boxes to be sold to the public. I just want you to look at this pic and notice how tall these "toys" are. IF you want to scare the droors off your children go ahead and purchase one of these. kind of spooky by funny at the same time. they are as tall or taller than all of your children on eachothers shoulders. They might be taller than you.. good luck shopping.
